Discover Rainbow’s End: South African Wine at its Best | Vivat Bacchus Supper Club
At Vivat Bacchus, nothing brings us more joy than supporting fellow South Africans, particularly in their endeavours to make great wine. It may be known as underrated, but South Africa has been producing wine since the 17th century, and their expertise shows!
One of our favourites is Rainbow’s End, a wine estate near Stellenbosch, and a proper family endeavour. Dr Jacques Malan gave up his practice to pursue his love of wine. Now his son Anton makes the wine and his other son Francois tends the vines of the 22-hectare estate. The vineyards rise up from the valley floor to 550m above sea level high up the Jonkershoek Mountain.
This October we’ll be welcoming Anton over for a special ‘Meet the Winemaker’ dinner where you’ll taste six of the vineyards’ gems expertly paired with six dishes from our talented executive chef.
We love showing off those doing great work in the world of wine, and Rainbow’s End are renowned for creating some of South Africa’s best wines. They’ve even won awards and accolades to prove it, so this truly is a special opportunity to be in the room with one of South Africa’s best.
Travelling all the way from South Africa to our restaurant in Farringdon, this exclusive opportunity will have Anton sharing his expertise while you taste the notes of each wine. You’ll be able to get the insider information from the man himself and fully immerse yourself in the unique South African experience.
Winemakers treat each vintage year separately and make what the season and the specific terroir of a specific vineyard block offers. Every year the winemaking techniques differ slightly in order to ensure the best possible result irrespective of a particular style. What is produced is a unique product and different wine style annually – the best that the season can offer, a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
The Malan family harvest the grapes by hand at dawn and sort each bunch individually; with such an attentive process, it shows the passion poured into every bottle. At the supper club you’ll be able to taste this in the wine varieties available, from merlot to cabernet sauvignon, each one will both surprise and delight.
